  • Overview

    The Chairperson leads the Department while furthering the goals and mission of the Medical Center. Demonstrates innovation and scholarship, significant experience in the practice and management of clinical medicine.


    • Establish a vision for the department and effectively communicate how it contributes to the success of individuals, institution, and profession.
    • Recruit and retain talented physicians and staff to fulfill the needs and missions of the Hospital.
    • Support the developmental and professional needs of medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, other health professionals, staff, and faculty and community physicians.
    • Encourage and support diversity among a Department’s constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, and acceptance.
    • Manage Department staff, finances and resources effectively and efficiently, in accord with financial and hospital policies.
    • Performs other duties as required.



    • MD required.  Specialization degree/certification may be required depending on the position.


    • Generally, a Chair position will require a minimum of ten (10) years medical experience and experience as a Unit or Specialty Head in a hospital or other health care facility.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Understand the evolving world of healthcare, education and research.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to convey knowledge in medicine to other physicians, residents and also to be able to communicate to patients in a manner they understand.
    • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

    Licenses, Certifications:

    • Must be Board Certified, current license to practice in NY State.


    Physical Requirements:

    • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.  Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
