  • Overview

    The Practice Associate III (PA III) is responsible for ensuring that all faculty physician services within a department or division run optimally, from a customer service, financial and operational perspective. The Practice Associate III collaborates with physicians and practice personnel to manage the day-to-day operations of the outpatient service and ensures that all other services are appropriately captured for billing and collections. The PA III assists in the resolution of billing and compliance issues, manages all purchasing and scheduling and maintains a highly productive office staff.


    • Responsible for overall management of the day-to-day operations of the department. Participate in management of physician revenue cycle.
    • Work with department clinicians in establishing standard protocols for an efficiently run service.
    • Monitor workflow to identify any front-end billing issues.
    • Provide assistance in ALL practice responsibilities, including but not limited to, charge entry, scheduling, chart preparation, and any other administrative support that may be necessary to support operations.
    • Supervise staff and is responsible for physician to physician communication where appropriate. All customer service issues will be managed by the PA III.
    • Collaborate with clinicians and practice plan leaders to implement initiatives designed to increase patient, physician and associate satisfaction.
    • Ensure that practice operations are conducted in accordance with applicable accreditation, statutory and regulatory requirements, such as the Joint Commission and the Department of Public Health
    • Collaborate with Physician regarding management and preparation of annual budgeting.
    • Actively participates in recruitment, onboarding and retention initiatives.
    • Serve as a liaison to service providers, admission and medical staff credentialing
    • Select, train, direct, and evaluate the performance of direct reports and when necessary initiates performance improvement plans and corrective actions.
    • Coordinate and work closely with Physician regarding outpatient services and other Hospital departments to assure that operations have adequate access, scheduling flexibility, space and clinical capacity for all clinic patient programs and services.



    • Graduate of an Accredited School for Medical Assistants or Bachelor’s Degree in health field, preferred.


    • Five (5) or more years of experience within a physician group practice or a hospital with employed physicians, can be offset by equivalent experience and coding certification from a recognized accredited facility.
    • Academic medicine or specialty-specific experience a plus.
    • Prior experience managing employees preferred.
    • Familiarity with CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding principals.
    • Familiarity with practice management systems, ideally AthenaHealth and/or EPIC.
    • Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Strong computer skills, including the Microsoft Suite and Outlook.
    • Strong customer service skills.
    • Foster an environment that promotes Respect, Dignity and Integrity.
    • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

    Licenses, Certifications:

    • Coding certification (AAPC , AHIMA)

    Physical Requirements:

    • Position requires prolonged periods of sitting and use of a computer and screen viewing throughout the working day.
