  • Overview

    Responsible for the continuous monitoring of the Central Monitor Unit, documentation of the rhythm strips, and timely reporting of rhythm changes to nurse or physician. Responsible for tasks/activities related to daily maintenance of the Monitoring Unit and area.


    • Participates in the nursing intershift report and obtains all, but not limited to patient's name, room/bed number, cardiac rate and rhythm on admission, cardiac rate and rhythm from previous shift, history of fatal dysrhythmia prior to and during hospitalization.
    • Makes rounds on all monitored patients and checks, condition of their leads, proper lead placement and skin integrity where leads are applied.
    • Continuously monitors the central monitoring system in area assigned.
    • Performs tasks/activities to ensure maximum accuracy and clarity of rhythm on oscilloscope, and to maintain safety mechanisms in place as per hospital policy and procedures, set proper gain and sensitivity control, auto mode recording, rate limits, alarms etc., test and change batteries as needed (for telemetry), check lead placement and re-apply if indicated and monitor from the best or most recommended lead as per policy/procedure or nurse/physician.
    • Contact Bio-Med for any broken equipment.
    • Reports to the nurse any change in rate or rhythm as soon as identified.
    • Documents shall be labeled with the appropriate patient identification prior to any scanning.
    • All documents scanned will place the letter “S” on the document to identify that the document has been scanned.
    • Troubleshoots monitoring problems, and performs corrective actions, if able, or refers to nurse or Bio-med Department as needed.
    • Obtains a 12 lead EKG as assigned by the nurse or physician. Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the central monitoring environment.  Maintains adequate monitoring  supplies such as electrode gel, leads, EKG paper, etc.
    • Checks the EKG machines, defibrillator and external pacemaker to ensure cleanliness, and readiness for use.
    • Maintains a patient log with dates of all admitted patients, unit box number applied and dates of patients discharged or transferred.
    • Performs related duties as assigned by the Nurse-in-charge.
    • Maintains patient confidence and protects hospital operations by keeping information confidential.
    • Keeps unit equipment operational by following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; calling for repairs.
    • Conserves unit resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
    • Perform other duties as requested.



    • High School Graduate or GED required. College education desirable. 


    • No experience needed, some preferred.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Math, and computer skills.
    • Works as a team player. Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions. Excellent oral and communication skills
    • Decision making and problem solving
    • Able to see, hear, read and write English
    • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position as required.

    Licenses, Certifications:

    • BCLS; Basic Arrhythmia Class with Certificate.

    • Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients

    • Sitting, standing, and walking for extensive periods of time
    • Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 35 pounds
    • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
    • Frequently sitting at desk working on computer
