  • Overview

    Assist the Registered Nurse and Physician in performing basic patient care activities and other non-professional duties related to surgical procedures.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain patient care environment; dispose of all garbage/trash; cleans horizontal surfaces and equipment; strip and cleans patient’s beds and rooms upon discharge of patients; reapplies clean linen; and cleans non-patient rooms.
    • Deliver, sets up, and retrieve patient’s meal trays, feeds patient, records patient’s food/fluid intake, and serves snacks/water.
    • Transport patient inter and intra departmentally, performs messenger duties and errands as directed, and operates pneumatic tubes.
    • Inventories and stocks clerical and clinical supplies and equipment.  Assesses equipment for working order; performs minor repairs and handyman tasks, repairs broken equipment to Engineering/Bio-med for major repairs.  Replenishes patient care supplies as needed.
    • Assist in positioning and preparing patient for surgery as directed.  Changes OR tables, sets up video equipment, suctions machine, and ESU as directed.  Obtains and transports supplies and equipment from and to perioperative areas as required.
    • Reprocess instruments and equipment according to established guidelines.  Cleans sterilizers and maintains sterilization records.  Follows appropriate techniques for the care and handling of special instruments and scopes.
    • Assist in the inventory of supplies and maintains adequate par levels.  Performs receiving and distribution functions.
    • Assist in codes and/or emergencies in assigned areas.
    • Performs messenger duties and errands as directed.  Checks and delivers specimens to Pathology according to established guidelines.
    • Performs other related duties as required.

    Qualifications

    Education

    • High School diploma or equivalent required.

    Experience: 

    • Must be certified in scope processing (state requirement).
    • Some experience working with patients or in health care facility preferred.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Good communication skills, attention to detail and ability to speak and read English required.

    Licenses, Certifications:

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
    • Must be certified in scope processing (state requirement).

    Physical Requirements:

    • Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. 
    • Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
    • An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
    • Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
    • Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
    • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
    • Frequently sitting at desk working on computer
    • Ability to flex working hours.
