  • Overview

    Responsible for the monitoring and enforcement of Standard/Isolation Precautions, hospital-acquired infection surveillance, specific environmental monitoring, outbreak management, regulatory compliance, and educational programs designed to inform and instruct hospital employees in safe patient care practices.

     

    Works in coordination with Environmental Services, Engineering, Construction and Facilities staff and contractors to assure construction safety, participates in and advises in the completion of hospital ICRA 

     

    Implements performance improvement activities which are selected based on data analyses, annual risk assessment and regulatory requirements.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintains surveillance to determine incidents of infections. Ensures precautionary steps are followed by patients, visitors and staff.
    • Conducts regular hospital rounds to ensure consistent implementation of control policies.
    • Assists in development of infection control policies, procedures and practices that are evidence-based and meet regulatory requirements and hospital needs.
    • Analyze and trend data collected to assist in planning initiatives that are compatible with organizational needs.
    • Review daily laboratory reports such as: isolation of patients, clusters, outbreaks, and exposures that require notification to the Department of Health; trains hospital personnel in the prevention of transmission of infections; prepares, disseminates information and reports as needed.
    • Assist Employee Health activities, such as evaluating source patients for exposure of healthcare workers to blood and body fluids, Varicella, and other exposure follow-up and in-service education on infection control.
    • Report any actual or suspected infection and institute any appropriate isolation procedures.
    • Collect and compiles data for comparative statistics shared with the NYSDOH, NYCDOH, National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN),
    • Provide orientation/review classes for hospital employees on the policies, standards and practices of infection control relative to their scope of responsibilities.
    • Conducts ongoing surveillance to determine incidents of infections; reports to the Infection Prevention Committee and maintains logs of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI’s).
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree required

    Experience:

    • At least two (2) years’ experience in Infection Prevention preferred.

    OR,

    • Minimum five (5) years of clinical experience required with a minimum one (1) year of hospital epidemiology preferred w/ Strong leadership skills, demonstrated ability in infection prevention concepts and practices. 

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Skills in MS Office and experience with infection control procedure is desirable.
    • Experience with EPIC or other fully integrated EMR system
    • Knowledge of DOH regulations and related agencies is essential.

    Licenses, Certifications:.

    • RN license preferred.
    • Certification as a CIC is preferred.
    • Current membership in APIC (Association of Professionals in IC) preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. 
    • Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
