  • Overview

    In an effort to minimize potential losses, healthcare facilities hire healthcare risk management professionals to monitor and manage risks and liabilities. Clinical risk managers work to ensure patient and staff safety, respond to claims of clinical malpractice, address patient complaints, and comply with federal and state regulations. While their primary responsibility is to protect the hospital’s interests, risk managers’ efforts contribute significantly to the quality of patient care.

    Responsibilities

    Risk managers coordinate the processes involved in managing general liability and risk exposures for a hospital or healthcare facility. They are usually responsible for the oversight and direction of an organization’s quality assurance programs, which involve medical staff peer reviews, patient care systems enhancements, quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

    • Investigate patient complaints and adverse events
    • Review medical records
    • Conduct risk-management training programs
    • Investigate adverse events and report them to regulatory agencies
    • Conduct root cause analyses (RCA) meeting and other case reviews
    • Play an active role in Patient Safety initiatives

    Qualifications

    Education: 

    • Bachelor’s degree is required.
    • Master’s Degree is preferred.

    Experience: 

    • A minimum of three (3) years' clinical experience, depending on complexity and decision making requirements, but may vary.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Proficiency in planning, coordinating and implementing patient and staff safety procedures
    • Good judgment and decision-making abilities
    • Strong interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Interest in continuous learning and a commitment to staying informed on regulatory changes
    • Talent for leading and facilitating group and team meetings
    • Attention to detail and analytical skills
    • Comfort in handling challenging situations that may involve adverse outcomes
    • Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor under pressure
    • Budget authority may be required (typically in larger depts.) but often budget approvals are relegated to more senior levels. Highly experienced managers often develop policies and procedures for a new operation or where gaps are evident and assist in setting strategy for the assigned department.
    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
    • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic medical record systems, applications and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Consistent with that necessary to work in a variety of patient care and office settings. 
    • Position requires some periods of standing, reaching, walking (during rounds) throughout the working day.
