  • Overview

    At Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, we strive to provide a high level of safe patient care through improved teamwork and collaboration among health care providers. As a result, we have established and implemented several Patient Safety and Quality initiatives. This position allows for continuation and growth of current and future Patient Safety and Quality initiatives.

    Responsibilities

    • Create and follow a curriculum that allows for education around Patient Safety, Quality, High-Reliability Organization (HRO), TeamSTEPPS, best practices in team communication, Just Culture, etc.
    • Faculty development around Patient Safety.
    • Provide a structure and means for employees to report adverse events, near misses and unsafe conditions.
    • Offer continuous education on what can/should be implemented to prevent medical errors.
    • Perform pre and post surveys to measure their skillset related to Patient Safety.
    • Organize and facilitate the Patient Safety Committee meeting.
    • Maintain the House Staff Safety Council – monthly meetings.
    • Lead disclosure training (healthcare providers).
    • Raise awareness of non-clinical skills such as empathy, humility and compassion.
    • Participate in Quality Improvement Projects related to Patient Safety.
    • Collaborate on Patient Safety activities/events.
    • Document improvement and participation.
    • Monitor transitions of care practices to reduce errors and communication breakdowns.
    • Enhance skillset by attending local, and one national meeting per year.
    • Knowledge of the Clinical Learning Environment Review and participation in ACGME CLER site visits.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Master’s degree preferred.

    Experience:

    • Clinical experience required.
    • Prior experience in Patient Safety preferred but not required.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Proficiency in planning, coordinating and implementing patient safety initives
    • Good judgment and decision-making abilities
    • Strong interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Interest in continuous learning and a commitment to staying informed on Patient Safety
    • Talent for leading and facilitating group and team trainings
    • Attention to detail and analytical skills
    • Comfort in handling challenging situations that may involve adverse outcomes
    • Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor under pressure
    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
    • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic medical record systems, incident reporting system, applications and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

    Licenses, Certifications:

    • Certifications and training relative to Patient Safety.
    • HRO training
    • TeamSTEPPS master trainer etc.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Consistent with that necessary to work in a variety of patient care and office settings. 
    • Position requires some periods of standing, reaching, walking (during rounds) throughout the working day.
